Chooisng a Therapist

There is a great deal of variation between therapists even between those who on paper have the same qualifications. Such variation will depend on their personal style and experience and how they might integrate different approaches. As a guide to making a choice I believe it is important to first consider the following:

  • make sure that any therapist you choose is accredited with a recognised organisation. This will ensure that their qualifications have been verified, that they are receiving regular supervision and on-going professional development and that they have a Disclosure and Baring Service (formally CRB) check. The main accrediting bodies for counsellors and Psychotherapists are UKCP, BACP, BABCP and HCPC.
  • it might be helpful to have a look first at the websites of one of the accrediting organisations listed above at the beginning of your search for a therapist as they have good information about the type of therapies available and which ones are most effective with which problem
  • it is very important that you feel comfortable with your therapist and that he/she leaves you feeling secure that they can be trusted and that they have the necessary skills and experience to help. It is important before you commit to a therapist that you telephone them and/or meet with them first to see whether you can work together. Trust your senses in making this choice and do not be surprised if you have to meet with a number of therapists before deciding which one to go with.
  • do ask any therapist about their training, background and experience with helping with the specific challenge(s) you are facing if this has not been made clear beforehand.

Please do call without obligation if you would like any further information about choosing a therapist tel: 07891148242 or e-mail
